It’s Seniors Week this week with a variety of different events around the state celebrating our seniors, health and ageing. Seniors can travel free on public transport all month.
I asked my mother what she’d like to do this week and one place she always wanted to visit was to see the futuristic car park on the grounds of Melbourne University.
Ah! Wonderful. We can do that. I thought.
For aficionados, this car park is an architectural wonder. It’s likely you would have seen it in the Mad Max movie. The entry to the car park is unique as it’s from the facade of the old Colonial Bank that used to be in Melbourne.
So off we traipsed and took a train and a tram to get to the university grounds. We slipped in through the electric gates and entered Trinity College where some students board. I didn’t take any photos there but I loved the old buildings that were built in the 1850s, (some of the oldest buildings of our state are there). Later, we walked out of the gates and walked around the campus.
We had no map simply meandering and going through tight paths in-between buildings. There was a mix of old and new. My favourite buildings are the old arts and law buildings in particular, the old quadrangle which reminds me of being in England. Or Hogwarts.
It was a lovely day even though the grey wet weather threatened. We had a cup of coffee and cake surrounded by young people going to or returning from lectures. I noted that there were fantastic artworks and sculptures in particular murals from the 1920s and buildings with superb art deco. I made a mental note to return here another time and take photos.
Walking around, there was so much beauty. For a moment, I even contemplated if I could go back to university to study (but then quickly discounted it because there’s no way I could afford it anymore 🤣)
Flowers were in bloom. I also saw these very tall striking flowers which are called Gymea Lillies and they were everywhere!
Oh and I saw these strange mushrooms.
