I could write about this to mean something about the world but no, I won’t. I’ll write about what’s happening at home instead. 🤣
Yesterday our CD player component broke down.
To be fair, it was over 25 years old. Andrew had wanted to spend the afternoon listening to music and he chose the CD to listen to. I didn’t tell him that the CD player had been playing up for some time unable to read the tracks and unable to get the CD out of it at times.
Yesterday, it finally broke much to his annoyance.
We had to move out the cabinet it sat in and unplug the dusty cables to remove the component.
While doing this, we also removed the cassette deck component too which had broken down over a decade ago but we never did anything about it. (We had ditched all the cassette tapes around the same time).
With the CD player, I thought it would be a matter of simply buying another component from JB Hi-Fi but I was wrong.
They don’t sell them anymore! They’re old technology I guess. We seem to be the only people in the world who still listen and buy CDs.
Of course, we could listen to the CDs through our DVD player but it’s not hooked up to the old surround sound speakers (ones with the old audio jacks or else, we would have to ditch those as well in the process) so Andrew looked online to see where we could buy a replacement machine but shock horror, refurbished CD player components were upwards of $500!
No way we were going to pay this money. We had to find another solution.
Instead I called my father and thankfully, it turned out that he had three CD player components laying around unused for years. We tested them out and found one that worked. I guess there’s value in hoarding these sometimes… 🤣
My other option was to get Andrew to post on his Facebook page to ask family and friends if they wanted to offload their CD player components. I thought that there’d be people who would be getting rid of this audio technology as many people just stream their music.
This week has been a bad week with things breaking down in the house so the CD player was just one thing extra that annoyed us especially at a time when we are counting the pennies! 🤣
My ten year old Canon printer broke, some door handles came off the doors of our house and into my hands, a shower tile broke, my 2011 iMac is slowly giving up the ghost and making grinding noises every time I boot it up. The dial of my 28 year old clothes dryer broke meaning now I use a sharp nose plier to turn the screw to get it to start. The dishwasher which is over 30 years old also is broken despite my many attempts at trying to fix it.
Added to that there’s a few light switches whose switches are loose and need replacing. And the CD player….
Ultimately though, all of the above are not priorities if I really think about it.
I’ve been washing the dishes by hand for a long time now, so I can continue doing this.
I can also do without a printer now opting for sending files to others who do have printers and asking them to help me out. (That’ll be infrequent because I never need to print anything any more).
For now, I have a 2013 Apple MacBook which is in workable order (despite not doing any updates anymore) plus a Windows tablet that is around 6 years old so these are okay to use for now. I don’t need another computer as long as I have my iPhone which is the main tool I use for everything now.
I think my priority will be the electrical work replacing the light switches and the door knobs but I guess they too can wait for a while.
Time to put a whole heap of things out for the hard rubbish collection…
