This month due to a lot happening where I had to drop everything and care for parents or the cat, I decided to start a few knitting projects of varying brain capacity.
I needed some brainless knits that I could take with me when waiting at medical appointments or vet visits just to get my mind off doom scenarios. The brainless knits were beanies which I made interesting by using two strands of 4 ply merino with an ultra fine silk mohair yarn (Isager) to create the plushest softest beanies.
Here’s an example of one of the beanies I knitted with the above yarn. 👇
I love knitting beanies so once I finished this one, I started another one but this time way more easier with a simple K6 P2 arrangement.
I love knitting with this yarn combination because it’s so soft in my hands. Besides, it always starts conversations with people who are just on their phones.
I guess knitting in public piques curiosity.
The second project is an easy lace pattern that I bought from the store Wondoflex.
They had the vest on display and it was as light as a feather. However, I’m trying to use up my yarn rather than buy anymore (it’s too expensive and I’m watching the dollars and cents now) so I have to make do with what I’ve got.
I used Bendigo yarn 8 ply luxury merino with a strand of Indiecita baby silk brushed alpaca. The result is a thicker garment but it has a bit of brush to it. I’m not enamoured with the colour but I needed to use it up.
The third and most difficult project is the Esther Jacket by PetiteKnit. I wanted to knit a heavier cardigan with a pattern of knits and purls. It’s called a Guernsey knit I believe. A combination of knits and purls to create a heavier garment. These jackets are so expensive to buy so I figured I’ll just knit my own.
I found this Petite Knits design and bought the pattern using cream coloured 10ply Bendigo Wool mills yarn. I swatched it with various other strands too to try and get the right tension. In the end I figured I needed at least 12 ply as I’m using 10ply with 5.5mm because it was as close to the tension I got but it’s going to create a looser flow garment so I am knitting one size below.
This one is very slow.
So slow that I can’t watch television either. I need to focus fully on it. This is going to be my major winter project and likely to last months for me. I’m not too fussed with that as I figure if I can just do at least ten rows per day, I’ll be fine.
Three projects on the go now that I can pick and choose depending on my brain capacity on any given day. On another note, I’m now looking at ways to reuse or recycle my yarn as it’s so expensive.
I’m thinking that any garment I haven’t worn for a while we be unravelled so I can wash and reuse the yarn. Alternatively in my jaunts around second hand shops, if I see any jumpers made from good quality yarn, I’ll buy the garment and unravel the whole lot.
It’ll just be a lot cheaper. Cost of living and all that. I could go out and get a job but frankly, I can’t be bothered.
