This paragraph from Charlotte Wood’s new book Stone Yard Devotional.
I’ve been a fan of her writing ever since I read The Weekend but this time her book is a little bit different about a middle aged woman who goes to an abbey in the Monaro Plains (outside of Canberra) to escape her life and grapple with grief. While there she has three different situations happen: the return of the bones of a sister nun who was murdered by a priest; a mouse plague and an activist nun who she knew as a child and teen who had a difficult background. The book reads like a reflection of all the hurt that is happening in people’s lives.
This particular passage above resonated with me.
2023 was a year which I “Mentally Unsubscribed” from a lot of things that I valued in the past around work to the point now that when I think back to it – I don’t reminisce or wax lyrical about it.
Instead, it seems like some distant meaningless memory snippets that are being slowly erased over time with every year since I left work.
