Yeah, right. I wouldn’t be LOLing.
A friend sent me this tweet yesterday and I had to roll my eyes when I read it.
(People send me screenshots of ego-driven LinkedIn posts, weird Instagram photos and various other social media posts so in a way, I’m constantly reassured that getting off social media was one of the best things I could have done for my health, well-being and sanity).
It seems the level of stupidity out there has increased dramatically.
I read tweets like this about companies asking their people to do this and I wonder what the longer-term impacts are.
I have an equal mix of cynicism and scepticism about how AI is used in companies as I can’t help but think that once again, everyone is jumping on a bandwagon of the shiny new thing without thinking about the ethics, implications and impacts of its use:
- What kind of message are they saying to their people about how they want them to communicate and interact with each other, with customers, and with systems?
- What is the impact of putting company and client data and information into open AI systems in the long term?
- What is the level of job satisfaction you get here when the company prefers you to use AI? (I mean, why does a company then even bother hiring you, the human?)
- Are companies REALLY restructuring roles to be more value-add leaving the transactional and routine to AI?
Part of me thought that if my job was reduced to coming up with prompts for AI engines to help me structure, plan, write and present the bulk of what I was paid to do by the company, well, I may as well resign and do something else more worthwhile with my time where I’m using my own brain power.
It seems that jobs like these will in the future, be in the firing line. There’s no way a company would pay employees the pay and the conditions of service when an AI system could do their work.
Of course, you can definitely argue that hopefully, these systems would allow the organisation (finally!) to restructure and allow their employees to do the most value-added work but really, has this happened to date?
