“Now your breakthrough album was Sunshine on Leith,” asks the Australian interviewer (one of our comedians) to Scottish musician duo, The Proclaimers.
He adds, “When you were growing up in Scotland, how did they explain sunshine to you?”
This was their reaction and mine. 🤣👇
Last night we went and saw The Proclaimers playing at the Athenaeum Theatre and I would say that it was a highlight of the year – and probably for a very long time. For one and half hours, they just sang their songs with little banter with the audience. Their songs, music, lyrics said it all and I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT.
Now I only knew of them through their two songs, 500 Miles and I’m On My Way. In fact, every person I told that I was going to their concert asked me, “What?! They have a concert for two songs?!”
Thing is, they’ve been around for many years. My husband, Andrew first saw them live when he was 17 (his first concert) and has been a fan since then collecting all their albums. Last week, we listened to the Very Best of The Proclaimers CD in anticipation of their live show, and I was surprised with their songs and what they’re about. I loved every single one of their songs but one I loved most was Sunshine On Leith and Cap in Hand.
I didn’t know what to expect for the show but after having a lovely dinner at the Bistrot d’ Orsay near the theatre (and ordering our food in French), we found our seats in the Dress Circle with an unobstructed view of the stage. Finally! No people in front of me so I could enjoy the show and just sing, tap and clap along with no jostling for space.
They sung a mix of old and new songs and I loved them all. I loved how they sung in their Scottish accents and also most of all, the themes of their songs which I resonated with. Why hadn’t I got into their music earlier on?! (Nothing is stopping me now as we have all their albums anyway).
When 500 Miles and I’m On My Way was sung, the crowd went wild.
I have a full video I created about the show with more video (2 mins). That’s all I took because I didn’t want to spend any more time filming it rather than experiencing it.
