I’ve been watching a Greek series (first of its kind) on Netflix and I binged on it. Netflix and Mega TV channel obviously pumped money into it to become one of the Top 10 Shows on Netflix. I was mesmerised by the first opening scenes but most of all it’s soundtrack.
The series takes place on the beautiful Ionian island called Paxos and it tells the love stories over nine episodes of the characters, their lives through the one storyline of a murder and the culmination of a music festival.
What makes it a standout is it’s production quality, the storyline which involves all the themes of love, young love, forbidden love, lost love and loss. It’s love and tragedy combined like a true Greek play. It includes current political themes (corruption, money laundering, hope and despair). It’s all there. And it’s gripping to boot.
The actress who plays the grandmother is Haris Alexiou one of the most famous, renown singers of Greece. She is one of the greats and she sings this beautiful song called “Prayer” for the festival (although she used to sing this earlier in the 80s). I think this song pretty much exemplifies the world and our place in it today.
We need this prayer to find ourselves again.
After I finished watching the series, I was left a little bit sad. I wanted it to go on. The song, as the last scene that culminated into the ending of the show and it’s characters was like a little goodbye. It’s a song that keeps going around in my head. On repeat.
If you haven’t seen Maestro in Blue, it’s on Netflix at the moment and worth your time. I read that it’s a way for Netflix to get into the Greek market and that they’re filming a second series now.
Here are the lyrics to the beautiful song
Give me a border to walk
Δώσ’ μου ένα σύνορο να περπατώ
Give me a name so I don’t get lost
Δώσ’ μου ένα όνομα να μη χαθώ
Give me a dream to hold on to
Δώσ’ μου ένα όνειρο, να κρατηθώ
Give me a vision to resist
Δώσ’ μου ένα όραμα ν’ αντισταθώ
Give me a border to walk
Δώσ’ μου ένα σύνορο να περπατώ
Give me a name so I don’t get lost
Δώσ’ μου ένα όνομα να μη χαθώ
Give me a dream to hold on to
Δώσ’ μου ένα όνειρο, να κρατηθώ
Give me a vision to resist
Δώσ’ μου ένα όραμα ν’ αντισταθώ
Give me a child to confess
Δώσ’ μου ένα παιδί να εξομολογηθώ
Give me a kiss, to wash away the evil
Δώσ’ μου ένα φιλί, να πλύνω το κακό
Wake up in the morning with a purpose
Ξύπνησέ με το πρωί μ’ ένα σκοπό
Who can say, halal in the life I live
Που να λέει, χαλάλι στη ζωή που ζω
Give me a child to confess
Δώσ’ μου ένα παιδί να εξομολογηθώ
Give me a kiss, to wash away the evil
Δώσ’ μου ένα φιλί, να πλύνω το κακό
Wake up in the morning with a purpose
Ξύπνησέ με το πρωί μ’ ένα σκοπό
Who can say, halal**in the life I live
Που να λέει, χαλάλι στη ζωή που ζω
**(Halali meaning to “all for me/my life”
