One of the things I love to do, now even more so that I don’t have a phone in my hand when I’m out, is people watching.
Imagine my delight that I can now do it from home by putting up YouTube channels on the big screen. There’s something fascinating watching people go about their daily business and checking out what they’re wearing. Thankfully, the majority of them have got their head down looking into their phones, or checking themselves out in the shop front windows to worry about you looking at them.
However I found that there are YouTube channels that show the people on the streets of various cities. My favourite is Milan. People my age or older, are dressed so stylishly with colour and panache. I like that.
In contrast, we don’t know how to dress in Melbourne. Most of the time, it’s black. It’s a mix between summer and winter clothes because of our changeable weather and it looks like something the cat dragged in. Let’s just say, we don’t care how we look. Shorts, ugg boots and puffer jackets is standard fare for us.
This guy explains why 👇. It’s amusing. 🤣
Meanwhile watching people in Paris, I remember my husband quietly pointing out to me one day as he whispered in my ear, “people are dressed nicer here” followed by, “where are all the overweight people?” and “why do young women wrap their necks with thick scarves, it looks like they’re drowning in them!”
We walked the streets in the middle of winter with tee-shirts on while the Europeans were all rugged up with coats, scarves and mittens. We didn’t understand just how HOT every store we went to was so we were trying to cool down when we got into the street. It was the case of “spot the tourist” with us. If it was a Melbourne winter, no one would have batted an eye lid with us wearing shorts and tee-shirts.
I think that Paris is overrated with its street style. Milan beats it hands down.
Meanwhile in Tokyo, who knows what’s going on there. 🤣
Meanwhile in Berlin, they’re copying Melbourne fashion.
Melbourne Berlin, same same. (It’s a city I haven’t visited but we will go back there as we want to do a German language and cultural immersion program 🤞)
Even Londoners dress better than we do.
I’ve done a lot of walking around Amsterdam and have spent a lot of time in the Netherlands. I didn’t look out of place there. They just dress comfortably. Not showy.
So whether you watch people on the street or on the screen, it’s fascinating to see how they express themselves and how different each city is.
