The Hoodoo Gurus is/was a band that was huge in the 80s, my formative years and this song in particular, has stuck with me for my entire life.
If someone was to ask me what song personifies ‘me’. It’s this.
It struck me on the way home in the car today, that when this song came on the radio, that regardless of whether I was singing this song at 18, 30 or now at 53, it’s still the same.
I don’t think I’ve ever “found my scene” but I’ve been in a lot of plays along the way.
Some a star, many supporting, even more as an extra.
This song will always remind me of the adventures of my early days in the Royal Australian Navy. They were the greatest years of my life. There were ups and downs, I missed home a lot but at the same time, I had some adventures, we worked hard and partied harder. If there was a soundtrack that was played in the background of those times, it would have been this band (and some other Australian bands in the late 80s).
I’m looking forward to going to the Gurus concert at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne next month. I can relive a bit of my youth knowing that others my age will be doing the same.
For an evening, we can all go back to 1987.
And another thing
I’ve been wondering lately
Oh, baby, Tell me where have you been? Now the stage is set
Where’s my Juliet, baby? Is it maybe
My Midsummer Night’s Dream? What’s my scene?
What’s my scene? what’s my scene?
Tell me what’s my scene
Like a talent scout
I’m always checking out new blood
Oh, I’d do good
If you tell me your game.
Playing Solitaire
Doesn’t get me where you would
And, honey, you could
Play by any rules that you care to name.
What’s my scene? (I gotta know)They say, yeah, they say
Making love, you can make it pay.
They say, yeah, they say, But we know there’s a better way
Any day.
And another thing
I’ve been wondering lately
Am I crazy
To believe in ideals? I’m a betting man
But it’s getting damn lonely.
Oh, honey, it only
I could be sure what I feel.
What’s my scene? (I’m dying to know)I’ll never know.
Well, I concede
I’ve been caught in someone else’s scene (but that’s not me).
Where, oh where, oh where can my scene be? Please answer – me
What’s my .?
But…..This is the song that we always sung – or on long drives between postings, packed with a full car and driving along the highway from one navy base or ship to another.…good memories.
