The MBJ award is a literary prize that our local Council awards to locals of all age groups who live or work in the area. Every year, they award prizes for short story and poetry categories and every year, I make some excuse not to submit an entry.
This morning, over a cup of coffee and flipping through the local paper, I see it again.
Should I write something?
I have this idea to write about a period of time in our local history during World War 2 on our street. The lands were orchards and on our street was an important receiving station doing secret work for the Allies in the Pacific. Maybe I can write a short story about that?
I’ve not written fiction since 1996.
Should I? Shouldn’t I? 🤔

You should.

I’m a tad scared. I think it’ll be the first time I’ll freeze when writing.
For motivation, I’ve kept that page of the newspaper open on the kitchen table for the last couple of days.
There, goading me.
Mocking me.
Taunting me.
As I stir my cup of coffee at the kitchen bench, I glance at it.
“Helen, write me.”
Is that how it’s done? 🤣
