Some time ago, I was introduced to Tessa furniture from a friend of a friend, and I fell in love with it.
Tessa Furniture is (was) an iconic name in Australian furniture manufacturing. The furniture was heavily influenced by Scandinavian designs and were well designed and crafted to quality standards. The factory was open in the late 1960s and closed permanently some years back.
(Unfortunately, we were only some months late. Imagine our frustration when we learned that the factory had closed – and that it had been situated near our place! DOH!)
Once I saw the sofa and the swivel chair along with the wooden arm rest and the foam upholstery, I was hooked. It reminded me of the furniture I grew up with and unfortunately, over the years had replaced with more modern (and devoid of character) chairs and sofas.
I mentioned this Tessa furniture to Andrew as we are on the lookout for a new lounge suite. Walking through modern furniture places, leaves us unimpressed and uninspired. All modern sofas seem to be low, flat, featureless, and uninviting. Worst of all, there is little neck and back support.
It’s fair to say the mass-produced furniture is ugly to look at and uncomfortable to sit on. It’s also unstylish.
So we’ve been looking for Tessa furniture for some years now. Not only are they hard to find but they’re also quite popular. Many people find these gems and have them repaired and reupholstered to their former glory.
Today, we saw a lounge suite that we both love, and it turns out the person who is selling it lives nearby. Andrew has headed out there just now as soon as he saw it online to check it out.
Fingers crossed, it’s in good condition so that we can restore it back to its 70s look and get rid of our ugly green lounge.
Life is too short to waste on mass produced shite.
At least, if we get this, it’ll have a story about it and we can be the new owners for 2022 and beyond along with many others who have also sat on it in years past.
Later:
We are now proud owners of some Tessa furniture. We bought a swivel chair, one armchair and a two seater. It gets delivered on Friday. Best I now find a furniture repairer and upholsterer. I’m going to pull out the flokati rug (shag pile in real sheep wool) out of storage, lay that on the floor.
We are going back to 1977 baby! Yeah!

Not sure if you saw their instagram page but they have an upholsterer on there especially for Tessa products.

Hi Jo, thank you so much for this. Whereabouts are they? I don’t use social media so didn’t see this. I appreciate it for letting us know because we will need to reupholster soon!
