What a hassle! (That’s a new term I’ve learned so putting it everywhere so I can learn it).
Not that learning French is a hassle – not at all. Being flooded with Saturday’s heavy rain and seeing the room filled with water with some of our collectible DVD box sets destroyed – now THAT’s un galère but that’s another story. Now the room smells musty. It’s not been a pleasant experience to see inside the house raining.
Well anyway.
I’ve been speaking to a couple of French friends through Microsoft Teams every week. I practice 30 mins of French in return for 30 min in English so that we can improve in each other’s language.
Tonight, rather than stay at my desk, I take the phone call onto my mobile and then show my orchids and artworks on the wall quickly realising that the extent of my vocabulary to explain and define art as well as gardening terms is severely limited.
At one stage, I stood in front of a large artwork on my wall pointing to a drawing of a castle (well, it happened to be King Minos palace) and I couldn’t think of the english word. Best I could come up with was <Le chateau du Roi Minos, tu le connais?>
The rest of the time I was pointing out to the blatantly obvious elements in the painting and upon reflection, this is how it translated to English….
I like this.
You like it?
It’s good.
My father drew it.
Look at that tree! The sky! It’s blue.
I forgot this word. Chateau. Chateau.
Oh god.
I have such a long way to go with French….
Luckily, Geoff thinks otherwise. I’ll take that.
