8 August 2017 by Helen Blunden This Week’s Snapstories of Personal Learning in the Week of 31 July 2017 Here are this week’s snap stories of personal learning commencing 31 July. Monday 31 July 2017 My Sydney trip, in truth, exhausted me. It gets really tiring chasing historical figures like Arthur Phillip and William Bligh around the town. Traipsing around the Rocks area (the oldest part of Sydney) and learning stories of first settlement overloaded my mind because I ended up wanting to learn more, forever hungry for yet more details and going down rabbit holes. It was never ending. There was a point where I simply had to stop and give my brain a break. So I didn’t snap today because I spent most of the day travelling from Sydney to Melbourne. A recent terrorist scare at the airport had created delays and I used the opportunity to buy four books, sit down at the departure area and read my way through them. I had little energy to snap anything that day. Tuesday 1 August 2017 In this snap story I recount how I have noticed that professional women usually ask for my help to coach them into using social media and networks to build their credibility and personal brand but within certain limitations – usually, these limitations are based on their anxiety or misconception of using social media. For example, they usually fear to be in front of a camera, sharing their expertise in their own unique way or scared of LinkedIn, Twitter or any other social network. One thing I have noticed is that they’re afraid to show their true personality in a work environment because of other people’s perceptions of their “professionalism”. I know I’m way past that now – long gone with trying to appease other people’s ideas of what THEY think I should be and act like that now, I feel as if I’m fearless when it comes to testing things out and experimenting with things. After all, what’s the worse that can happen? I’ve put it all out there that the only way is to improve on it or at least help people see me fall flat on my face so that they can try something else. In this snap story, I talk about my Personal Network Builder Coaching Program and how I love helping people to use these social networks and media to show and share their work, build their networks and express their story and expertise in their own unique way. Thursday 3 August 2017 During some days, I’m overcome with a need to just pull away from social media and revert into my shell. So I spent Wednesday and Thursday doing that. I used the day to catch up on my reading and do a bit of thinking and knitting. It was what I needed to rest and recuperate my buzzing mind. Friday 4 August 2017 The rest was exactly what I needed to get back to my usual chirpy self and go out to meet my Twitter pal @White_Owly who tweets wonderful messages about organisational design and future of work. When I met her in person for the first time I explained to her that I felt like I was her human chat bot because I continually retweeted her tweets which I found to cut right through to the core of the absurdity and insanity of corporate work but that they were thought provoking. Saturday 5 August 2017 Today was a fantastic day because I attended the ProBlogger Event 2017 at Rydges Hotel in Melbourne. I was introduced to ProBlogger Darren Rowse some years ago because he has an excellent site and podcast on blogging tips and strategies. Last year he held THE BEST CONFERENCE I’VE EVER BEEN TO at the Gold Coast RACV Resort (you can read about it in my blog post What Did I Learn at Problogger?). This year was a bit more low key but nevertheless just as educational for me. I’ll be writing a separate blog post on what I learned at ProBlogger 2017. Want to see what ProBlogger was about last year? I did a LearningNow TV report that you can watch here… (I’m continually amazed when I review the content – both written and visual – that I have captured during events. It’s quite tiring to do this all the time but I learn so much in the process). Never miss a post! Subscribe to our mailing list to receive curated blog posts.
