Last week I visited the McClelland Sculpture Park in Langwarrin Melbourne.
It’s a great place to spend a morning or afternoon wandering the grounds and looking at the various modern art sculptures that interact with the elements.
Looking at art – any art – opens the mind into a curious and inquisitive state.
I was pleasantly surprised with the park which has free entry. (That’s rare!)
I didn’t know about this park and only noticed a sign along the highway so decided to stop by and take a look. It was a gloriously sunny day so I wandered around the paths and checked out the sculptures all of which were mesmerising to look at.
I wondered if I was ever to create a piece of sculpture, what would I create?
- A labyrinth🤔
- Gigantic knitting needles made of enormous wooden telegraph poles with heavy rope that twists and turns through the park which you can follow to the end of a tall and massive ball made of rope that kids could climb? 🤔
Imagine my surprise when I saw it had a labyrinth!
It was my favourite sculpture . It’s not exactly a maze which has multiple points of entry and exits and serves to confuse. A labyrinth has one entrance which is also the exit. The aim of the labyrinth is to walk towards the entire and ponder and reflect about a problem and then walk back out again. Hopefully by the time you reach the exit, you have a solution! A labyrinth is meant to shed light and inspire. It’s more meditative.
Naturally I spent time walking in it.
Walking on the track, you come across different paths where art meets you. I loved this rhinoceros!
Afterwards, I headed to Harry’s Cafe where I ordered a coffee and a delicious Portuguese tart which I enjoyed at a wooden bench near the lake.
A great afternoon out.
