Gigantic Mushrooms

December 2023

2023 was a year for the mushrooms.

For one, some woman in some regional town outside of Melbourne tried to murder her family by inviting them to lunch and offering them a mushroom salad. Unfortunately a few died from the meal served but it turned out that it wasn’t the first time she had tried to do this. She was successful this time however.

I can now understand that she may have had opportunities to find mushrooms. This year I’ve seen them popping up everywhere.

All kinds. All types. All colours.

However I hadn’t seen these GIANT mushrooms before until yesterday.

I was in the 18th hole and had just hit my drive into the scrub. I rolled my eyes and walked over to where I thought my ball might be a tad worried about avoiding snakes. Instead I see these ENORMOUS mushrooms sprouted and one was broken that I picked up.

I got my playing partner to take a photo. They were about 30 cm in diameter. I

f you could eat these, you’d be able to serve about four people. A decent high protein meal – and toxic that’s for sure.
